Background to the programme and subject area The Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy programme enables students to gain professional accreditation with the General Dental Council as dental hygienists and dental therapists. The programme is full-time and runs for 27 months. There are numerous reasons to study Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy at the University of ߲ݴý. The School of Clinical Dentistry is one of the leading UK dental schools. The School takes a lively and innovative approach to preparing students for their profession, employing dynamic, multidisciplinary teaching and learning methods designed to meet the different needs of each individual. Our teaching is informed by latest developments including the research activities of our staff. In research assessment exercises the School has consistently ranked highly among UK dental schools. As a result our students learn about the new techniques and advances that are rapidly taking place in the field of dentistry. The programme content is to a large extent governed by the General Dental Council with professionalism at its core; however there are some distinctive features to the ߲ݴý programme. At ߲ݴý we place great emphasis on training the dental team together and there is a strong belief in integrating the dental hygiene and dental therapy students with dental students, in order to prepare students best for practice. As well as clinical training in the Dental School and Hospital we send all our students on a series of placements in primary care settings away from the Dental School and Hospital. This pioneering Outreach theme is one of the most rigorous placement programmes in the UK and gives our students a head start in their careers. Our special combination of integrated training and extensive practical experience produces caring, competent and confident professionals. The programme is organised into longitudinal blocks of teaching and learning called themes which have specific learning objectives and are carefully structured to aid progression. Dynamic teaching and learning methods are employed which are broadly divided into lectures, tutorials and seminars, practical classes, clinical placements, projects and reports. A strong emphasis is also placed on independent learning. Aims and learning outcomes have been identified for all themes which are distributed to staff and students. Feedback is provided to students throughout the programme and in a variety of ways. This enables students to gain more self-knowledge. Lectures, tutorials and seminars Lectures are used to convey essential information. Tutorials explore material through discussion and aid the application of theoretical knowledge to the clinical setting. Seminars are used to facilitate exchange of ideas through discussion. Lectures, tutorials and seminars also contribute to the development of appropriate attitudes. (K1-K13). Clinical placements Focus on the development of clinical skills and attitudes but also encourage knowledge and understanding outcomes. Student development over the course of study The programme follows a logical progression with a range of longitudinal blocks of teaching and learning called themes. Progression is achieved by continual assessment. Year 1 The emphasis is upon introducing students to the broad range of knowledge and skills which Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists require in order to practice. The Study Skills and Personal Development theme supplies students with a basic understanding of the tools required for successful study and the methodological basis of evidence-based practice. The Human Body in Health and Disease theme introduces students to the anatomical and physiological foundations of dentistry. The Law, Ethics and Professionalism theme introduces students to the legal, ethical and professional obligations of dental professionals and encourages a professional approach to working as a team and caring for patients. The Health Promotion and Education I theme introduces students to the principles of health promotion and education and the ways in which it is organised and applied to oral health in health care settings and beyond. The Oral Disease I theme introduces students to features of common oral disorders and diseases. The Health Promotion and Education II theme investigates the relevance of social, environmental, economic and health policies for oral health. The Pre-Clinical Skills I-III themes introduce students to the prevention, treatment and management of oral disease, which includes the operative work of a Dental Hygienist and Dental Therapist. Following successful completion of the Pre-Clinical Skills themes, students progress onto the Clinical Practice theme, where through their hospital-based placement they can treat and manage patients under close supervision. Year 2 The emphasis is on extending students knowledge and skills in the areas previously introduced. New material is also covered and greater emphasis is placed on analysing, interpreting and applying the results of research and on self-directed learning. The Clinical Practice themes hospital-based placement continues to provide students with the learning experience to develop their clinical skills. Greater emphasis is placed on becoming independent, autonomous and reflective practitioners. In addition, through a series of clinical rotations, students gain a greater understanding of the different dental specialities and how these function in hospital settings. Whole patient care and integrated clinical practice is also emphasised, particularly through the Outreach theme and its primary-care placements. The Oral Disease II theme continues to develop students understanding of common oral diseases and also introduces those diseases which may be less common but have potentially serious consequences. The Dental Radiography theme introduces the knowledge, skills and protocols required in dental radiography and enables students to safely and competently practice dental radiography. The Health Promotion and Education III theme and its Oral Health Promotion Project provides students with the opportunity to design and evaluate an oral health promotion intervention and to gain experience in key transferrable skills including collaboration, management of time and resources, and report writing. During the final part of the programme particular attention is paid to the successful transition from education into the workplace.
